Romantic Love Song Poem: “A Red, Red Rose”

Now let us go deeper into the one who had fame about writing romantic love song poem, it was Robert Burns’ “A Red, Red Rose”. Who was Robert Burns? And what was his “A Red, Red Rose” anyway? Robert Burns was representative of Scotland, much like whisky, haggis, bagpipes and kilts. He was an educated man and a ladies’ man, though in fact he was a poor man. Poverty, informal education, disappointed love, nationalism and literary and financial success can be identified by all Scots and common men the world over were what he had his journey through but his life was shortened by rheumatic heart disease, he lived in 1759-1796. With a happy ending, just like in a love story, he had his life so. Almost a national symbol of all things Scottish was what he had become.

Burns’ family lived on sparse and rented farmland on the west coast of Scotland with seven children raised by his family. His family moved from farm to farm as their farm was not successful, but as a proud tourist attraction, the family cottage is one that still stands. Burns worked long hours with his father and it was harsh to live the life on the farm in western Scotland. His father managed to hire a local teacher to tutor Robert because he recognized the value of education. Mathematics, theology, geography, politics, philosophy, French, Latin, current poets, Shakespeare were what the disciplines he mastered on, that explained how he was an extremely bright student. Burns was also expert on the Bible and a devout Church member as he had his father reading the Bible during the evenings around the cottage fireplace.

At age 15, Burns wrote his first poem. His first love for a girl named Nellie Blair made him wrote the poem that called “Handsome Nell”; we give you for an excerpt from it as follows:

“O once I loved a bonnie lass,
aye, and I love her still,
and whilst that virtue warms my breast,
I’ll love my handsome Nell.”

Burns stated that he had “never had the least thought or inclination of turning poet till I got once heartily in love, and then rhyme and song were, in a manner, the spontaneous language of my heart,” was one of his later comment on this poem.

Burns in his life has won numerous women’s attention and or probably this was caused by how he was a witty and charming man as well. He had the inspiration for various poems from a dozen or more women to identify on his creations.”One Fond Kiss” and “A Red, Red Rose” were the two creations of his numerous creations of his romantic love poems.

A major turning point in life was had by Burns at age 27 in 1786. Burns had a lover, Jean Armour, who gave him twin sons, with fact he suffered a disappointing love affair with her at the time. But Jean’s father rejected Burns’ offer of marriage and it was also because of her father and the local community were outraged by their affair. Burns finally made plans to leave Scotland as he dejected and depressed, and then to Jamaica in the West Indies he sailed across there. Burns submitted a volume of his poetry for a publication to finance the trip. His unbound and simple volume was called “Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect” that also sometimes knows as “The Kilmarnock Edition” were published for 612 copies. Socialites in Edinburgh were enchanted by the poems and they amazed that a poor farmer could write very well, so the Burns’ poems were well-received. Burns planned a trip to Edinburgh instead of planning his escape to a new world. Burns had popularity and admiration that brought by his obvious wit and intelligence plus his ingratiating style and confident manner. In Edinburgh, soon after, a second publication of his work was executed there.

Let us now walk into his one of greatest famous creations: “A Red, Red Rose”!
“A Red, Red Rose” was written by Burns as a traditional ballad on four verses of four lines each and was first published in 1794. The two similes contained on a quatrain that begins his “A Red, Red Rose”. A springtime blooming rose and then with a sweet melody was what he compared with his love. This is the stanza most commonly quoted from the poem and these are popular poetic images.

The ending with the metaphor of the “sands of life” or hourglass on the second and third stanzas become increasingly complex. What a wonderfully poetic images; one the one hand we are given the image of his love lasting until the seas run dry and the rocks melt with the sun. The passage of time and the changes that result were what Burns reminds us about them on the other hand. A red rose which newly sprung in June, that we know from experience will change and decay with time was that the first stanza and its image of a red rose being recalled. That was typical of the more mature Robert Burns: the complex and competing images.

Here is the “A Red, Red Rose”:

A Red, Red Rose
O my luve's like a red, red rose.
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve's like a melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will love thee still, my Dear,
Till a'the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun:
I will luve thee still, my Dear,
While the sands o'life shall run.
And fare thee weel my only Luve!
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile!
By: Robert Burns

With a farewell and a promise of return, the final stanza wraps up the poem’s complexity. It comes with four stanzas of four lines each that written as a ballad, a traditional one. Alternating lines of four beats, or iambs and three beats is had by each stanza. The four iambs consists an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, as in da-dah, da-dah, da-dah, da-dah, were had by the first and third lines. The three iambs are consisted on the second and fourth lines. For singing or recitation and originated in the days when poetry existed in verbal rather than written form, this is a form of verse that well-adapted.
